The Wright Brothers

100 years of flight

At a very young age, Orville and Wilbur Wright developed a fascination with flying. Years later, the brothers found themselves camped on a barren strip of land called Kitty Hawk, a fishing village island on the Atlantic Coast off of North Carolina. They had traveled there to test their very first flying machine prototype. Most people who knew of The Wright Brothers and their experiments in flight laughed and scorned at their ideas, considering it all to be a waste of time. But Orville and Wilbur ignored the criticism and ridicule, and returned to Kitty Hawk year after year to test a new revised model of their vastly improving flying machine. On December, of 1903, The Wright Brothers had developed a model complete with a motored propeller, weighing 600 pounds, and taking three weeks to assemble. This time, their invention wasn’t so amusing to outsiders; some even turned up to watch the anticipated attempt of flight. History was made that day, as the machine, with Orville aboard, flew steadily through the wind for 120 feet and 12 seconds, resulting in an aviation miracle. The monument in Dayton, Ohio, honoring that historical moment at Kitty Hawk, proudly reads:

“As Scientists, Wilbur and Orville Wright Discovered the Secret of Flight.

As Inventors, Builders and Flyers, they Brought Aviation to the World.”

The Wright Brothers Limited Edition Pen honors the endless dedication of these two determined brothers, who stopped at nothing to succeed and make an impact on aviation technology and the human spirit. The painted barrel of the pen is a stunning recreation of Kitty Hawk and the historical moment of the first flight on that cold December morning. The land is barren and flat as The Wright Brother’s plane tentatively sails through the whistling winds above, striving to achieve the unfathomable goal of a successful flight. Within the mysterious sky are the ghostedimages of Orville and Wilbur Wright, observing their famous flight with proud spirits and honorable dignity. Above and below the painted barrel are sterling silver crosshatch borders, symbolizing the intricate structure of the plane’s wings.

R_wright-brothersThe body of the pen is covered in textured sterling silver, representing the industrial aspect of engineering and design that made the first flight possible. Within the crisscross-engraved clip is a portion of the actual wing fabric of the Wright Brother’s plane that helped it soar through the air at Kitty Hawk. This amazing piece of aviation history is a treasured remembrance of the twelve seconds that changed the world.

At the time, Orville and Wilbur Wright didn’t comprehend the significance of their actions on December 17, 1903. They simply didn’t realize that, in a matter of 12 seconds, the future of transportation and aviation technology had been drastically altered. The mystery of human flight, which had stumped even the most sophisticated and intelligent inventors of the world, had been solved by two ordinary men, motivated only by their intense desire to understand, their unwavering courage, and their incredible motivation to succeed.
